“Tragedies of 2016 which shook the World”

Years come and go but there is always something about the year that leaves you feeling a little empty.

Every year there is a huge number of tragedies that bring us closer to reality of life. Let’s talk about 2016. What comes to your mind? Probably the ones you lost during the course of the year? But we also remember the tragedies that have left the world in shock. So, let’s talk about all the tragedies that have occurred in 2016.


Philadelphia Train Crash: On April 3, a train ran into a backhoe that was stuck on the track. Over 30 people were injured in this tragedy. 2 people have died in an Amtrak train crash near Philadelphia.


Tennessee Helicopter Crash: This incident took place behind an outlet mall in the eastern part of Tennessee, in Sevier County. 5 people died in this crash.


Kabul Bombing: The blast happened near the U.S. Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan. More than 320 people were injured and at least 28 were killed.


John Ridsdel: On September 21, 2015, he was kidnapped by Abu Sayyaf’s militants in the Philippines. After maltreating him for about 8 months, they brutally beheaded him on 25th April, 2016.


Egypt Air Flight 804: The airplane was heading from Paris, France, to Cairo, Egypt and cruising at an altitude of 37,000 feet – considered to the safest part of any flight – when it vanished from the radar and the airline tweeted subsequently. Air traffic controllers in Greece spoke to the pilot at 02:27 AM, according to CNN and no problem with the plane was reported at that time.


Michigan Bicycle Accident: 5 adults died June 7, 2016, after a pickup truck hit a group of bicyclists north of Kalamazoo, Michigan. All of the victims were adult riders.


Orlando Nightclub Shooting: In June 12, 2016, a gunman opened fire in the nightclub ‘Pulse’ in Orlando, Florida. 49 People were killed and at least 50 were injured.


Russian Boating Accident: At least 14 teenagers died during a stormy night while boating on Lake Syamozero in northwest Russia. There were 37 survivors who were able to swim to an island.


Colorado Van Crash: 5 people died in the wake of a collision involving an Amtrak train and a van.


Istanbul Ataturk Airport Bombing: The explosions occurred at the arrival gates of the airport. At least 43 people have been killed and 239 were injured.


Dallas Rally Shooting: 5 police officers were killed and seven other officers wounded.


France Truck Attack: On Bastille Day, a truck ran into a crowd of people in Nice, France. More than 20 people were injured and at least 84 were killed and 50 stated to be in critical condition.


Baton Rouge Shooting: 3 law enforcement officers were killed after a gunman ambushed them, while 3 other officers were wounded in the attack.


Japanese Disabled Care Home Attack: 19 people died in a knife attack at a residential care center for people with disabilities.


Texas Hot Air Balloon Accident: Unfortunately, the balloon caught fire whilst in the air near Lockhart, south of Austin. 16 People died in this accident, there were no survivors.


Rouen, France, Bar Fire: According to multiple news sources, an accidental fire broke out at a bar, killing 13 people and injuring 6.


Italian Earthquake: An earthquake that hit central Italy leading to the death of 120 people.


Cascade Mall Shooting: In September 23, 2016, 5 people were shot inside a Macy’s at the Cascade Mall in Burlington, Washington.


Blake Snyder: He was a St. Louis County police officer and shot on October 6, 2016. He was just 33 years old.


Hurricane Matthew: At least 280 people in the Caribbean and 15 in the United States have died in the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew.


Palm Springs Tour Bus: In Palm Springs, California, a tour bus crashed into a freight truck, killing 13 people and injuring 31.


Slain Iowa Police Officers: According to CNN, two police officers were killed in what was described as two separate ambush attacks in a suburb of Des Moines, Iowa.


Amjad Sabri: He was a famous Pakistani Qawwal, who was shot dead in Karachi in the Liaquatabad area.


Shahlyla Baloch: She was the Pakistan women’s football team striker. She died in a tragedy accident that happened near Do Darya.


Chattanooga School Bus Crash: Crash of a school bus in Chattanooga, Tennessee injured 23 people and killed 6 children.


Collin Rose: He was a Wayne State University campus officer. He died from a gunshot at the age of 29.


Colombia Plane Crash: According to CNN, 75 people killed after a charter crashed in Colombia southeast of the city of Medellin. Among the passengers, there was the secondary Brazilian soccer team.


Tennessee Wildfire: Due to wildfires in the Great Smoky Mountain region of Tennessee, 14 people have died.


Indonesia Earthquake: According to CNN, at least 97 people were killed in the wake of a 6.5 magnitude earthquake in Indonesia’s Aceh province.


Pakistan Airplane Crash: Pakistani International Airlines plane crashed in Pakistan and took the lives of 42 passengers. There were no survivors. Amongst other passengers, renowned Islamic scholar, Junaid Jamshed was also traveling with his wife.


Istanbul Bombing: At least 38 people have died and 155 were wounded in a pair of bombing attacks in Istanbul, Turkey, reported by CNN.


Cairo Cathedral Bombing: According to CNN, at least 24 people have died and dozens more were wounded in a bombing attack in a Coptic church in Cairo, Egypt.

2016 has definitely been a sad year for Pakistan including other countries. We have lost so many beloved countrymen this year that left many families in an eternal mourn. Pakistan even lost some of its biggest assets in these incidents like Amjad Sabri and Juniad Jamshed, leaving a void in our lives. We can now only hope and pray for 2016 to end on a good note and 2017 to turn out a very peaceful and beautiful year for Pakistan and all the countries across this world.
